Arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea)

Size: 33 -35 cm
Population at Anda: Not breeding on the island

The arctic tern is the most impressive migratory bird of all birds in the world. It will move from its summer breeding areas in the Arctic to the winter feeding areas in the Antarctic. Due to the very long travel distance, the arctic tern has a very special skill to survive the journey. They can sleep with one side of the brain at a time, while the other part is active, and thus keep flying continuously for a long time. In Norway, the terns are awaited during the celebration of the Norwegian Constitution day 17th of May and their return to the Arctic is considered a sign of summer.
